I thought that sports crags where always given french grades (eg 5, 5+ etc) but recently I have seen some sport climbs given 5c's, 4a's etc which I am not sure how to intepret. I am wrong or are these trad grades and not sport grades?

And in a considerable part of the world other systems are used anyway.

4a, 4b, 4c... sport grades are widely used in Slovenia, Croatia, Italy (there's also this funny little crag near Garda lake with climbs graded 2a, 2b...etc) and I've also seen them in certain crags in France and Spain. Not sure what the difference between 4a and 4b is, but then again, a friend of mine can't tell the difference between 7b and 7c.

They are sport grades. Its just a way to sub divide the number. So 5a is easy grade 5, 5b is mid grade 5 and 5c is 5+. Im currently in kalymnos sport mecca and here the grade 4s and
5s are subdivided to 4a,b,c 5a,b,c just like the 6s and 7s always are in sport crags. The french crags just seem to prefer using + symbol on 4 and 5s.
