Could the knowledge and kind folk of UKC please point me the direction of a guidebook which will help me identify the plants of my environment. Ideally it should be pocket size with pictures and preferable broken up in sections, canals and rivers, woodland, meadow, upland….

Not specific, but have a look in second hand bookshops.

The definitive guide is probably The Wildflower Key by Francis Rose, It's technical (maybe too technical) but the illustrations are very good and combined with the descriptions of the plants and their habitats, you can use it without a lot of botanical knowledge, but it IS a biggish book and maybe a bit more professional than you need.

At the other end, the Field Studies Council do an excellent series of fold out laminates detailing common plant species habitat by habitat from peat bogs to playing fields. start with the "what's that flower" pack, perhaps?

Also lots of good books here

(they are pricier than the like of Amazon, but I'm guessing their tax structure isn't as.... efficient)

Collins are some of the best nature identification books I've got.

Edit.

Looks like Collins have sold the rights to these people http://www.nhbs.com/title/108194/wild-flowers-of-britain-and-ireland

Great book!

I would say the Collins photographic guide, actual photos of wildflowers, rather than drawings with dodgy colours. Got mine from WHSmith(?) years ago, u can probly order throu Amazon.

Plenty of good book on wildflowers but presumably you want the wider flora including trees. We've got a couple of shelves of plant books but none are by habitat.

I have been learning my wildflowers and by far the best strategy was given to me by a park ranger. He suggested carrying the FSC chart for the type of area I was walking in ( http://www.field-studies-council.org/publications/fold-out-charts.aspx ) and photographing anything I didn't recognize for later identification. I use Collins Flower Guide by David Streeter and Christina Hart-Davies and The Wildflower Key (as above).
