Gates Again

The gate to which I referred in an earlier post has been reduced from a width of five feet to about three feet.

Consequently I now need to install a (non-load bearing?) gate post. This will be bedded in rather stony soil and to do this I need to cut(using a suitable cutter) a hole in a 2 inch thick concrete paving slab. There will be 70" of the post above ground but I'm just wondering how much of the post needs to be buried. As said it is not the post upon which the gate will be hinged. That is already in situ bolted to the wall of the house.

Can anyone advise me please?

what will be the wind loading, ie will the post be attached to a fence?

If it's a 70" high fence then 2 ft in the ground secured by post mix.

There I was thinking you were talking about 'The' Gates

If you need 70" sticking out of the ground then bury the rest of the post.

Can't fault the logic in that. I'm hoping his post is either 71" or 120"...

Mypyrex often has posts that could do with being buried.

Sounds like an innuendo...

A rule of thumb would be at least a third of the height above ground, concreting posts in is the devils work imo, in stony ground good tamping and cross supports are strong enough for most applications.

Postcrete can be a quick way of setting posts in the ground.

In reply to mypyrex:

for the size and wt of the gate you want 3' in the ground post fix is ok as you can break it up easily if you ever have to dig it out, but be aware concrete speed up the rotting process

In reply to mypyrex:

I'd aim for about a third of the post below ground, so about 30 to 35 inches.

As others have said don't use any non-permeable infill if it's a wooden post.
