You think you've heard it all:

Margaret McDonough, 52, and her daughter, Nicola, 23, died after they were found badly injured in a Premier Inn in Greenock, Scotland, after Linsey Cotton, posing as a lawyer, told them they faced decades in jail for breaching confidentiality laws.

The threat was part of an elaborate story concocted by Cotton, in which she used a fake identity to romance Margaret’s 33-year-old son, Michael, then pretended to be the fictional woman’s siblings, parents, nurse and lawyers to defraud him and his family.

In reply to Morgan Woods:

Tragic that there are people like Cotton out there.

In reply to Morgan Woods:

Bizarre doesn't even begin to describe this saga. What I cant understand is how these women were taken in by this scam.

In reply to mgco3: Agreed. It takes a few minutes to check that someone is an actual lawyer, and not much more to vist them at their office. It's tragic on many level, but inexplicable how so many can be taken in by such stuff.

In reply to Frank the Husky:

This was played out over a long period of time and was her son's "girlfriend". People can be quite trusting in that kind of situation.
