Rewiring/bodging a heating programmer

I've got a potterton ep2000 ch/hw programmer which controls my solid fuel boiler at home but it's always been a bit pernickety and now it's stopped working. I'd like to just have one switch that turns the ch/hw on and off.

It seems the next model up is a direct swap but it's £60 and I begrudge paying that for a fancy switch. There's some pictures of it here:

Realistically I'll probably end up just replacing it with a new one but I'd be interested to know how to bypass it. Does anyone know how these things work? Presumably it's just switching the pump off and on so there must be a way to just bypass the controller and join two wires together.
