Any suggestions appreciated...

MacBook Pro - switch on and I get the logo, spinning timer and a progress bar.

Progress bar gets to about 25% then it switches off.

If I open up with CMD R and try to repair Fisk it asks me to backup first then reinstall. However I have no idea how to backup when I only have access to the Disk Utility menu.

Thoughts?

Have you got a second Mac and a thunderbolt cable? If so then start in target disk mode and transfer the data. Alternatively using a third party utility such as Diskwarrior on a USB stick will often save a litigator trouble.

HTH Steve.

Which OSX version are you on, and which model of MBP is it? Some of the middle aged ones are very easy to open and get the HDD out. Can then put a new drive in and start agin, retrieving data from the (now external) old HDD afterwards using target disk mode as above.

Erm, you have backed it up in the past, haven't you? Time machine works pretty well and if you use it you will have a backup from about an hour before it went wrong.
