Hi I've looked back on some of the previous threads on this, so am looking for a more recent view.
Six months ago I put my daughter with her prov licence onto our insurance, our annual was £250, and we had to pay an extra £700 for 6 months to get her on it,
I've now got the annual renewal through and its £1900 !! so the maths don't add up . she is still provisional

I've been on a couple of the price comparison sites and they're down at £400 total for the year.
I'm obviously going to contact them to understand better, but I cannot see the differences easily.
I must be missing something.

Any help or advice on how to get the best deal?

Many thanks

You probably aren't missing anything. It all comes down to what risk a particular insurer attaches to having a young driver on the policy and if they differentiate between having a full or provisional licence.

As always with insurance read it all carefully to check you are getting what you think.

Probably just trying to rip you off. My renewal was 500 this year, I got some quotes off a comparison site and my the cheapest at 300 was my current insurer! So they were trying to take me for 200 quid

Standard procedure when it comes to insurance. Many companies send you the renewal at heavily inflated prices in the hope that you just renew without checking.

I once had an annual bike insurance for £200/y and got a renewal quote for £700. Went to their website and i could buy the same insurance from the same company for £180. Phoned them up, and they offered me to renew for £170.

I gave them a share of my thoughts and promptly changed underwriters

Have a look on comparison sites but then go to the website of the best deal and it will be cheaper. The comparison sites also put a charge on so they make money.

I got the shock of my life last year.
My renewal came through and when I looked in to it on all the comparison sites I couldn't beat it.
That has never happened before.

It depends if you expect your daughter to pass her test in the near future? I paid month by month on a special provisional drivers insurance as taking a full year meant that we got no refund when he passed and had to start all over again.

Get them driving ASAP and building up their own discount.

Plus chauffeuring you to the pub etc......

Having just been through all this, with my own car at the age of 23:

I got cover as a learner through a specialist insurer, Acorn. Really good to deal with, straightforward on the phone, friendly UK call centre, good prices (£95/month fully comp, as the only driver on that car, as a learner). If it had been someone else's car who had it insured independently, probably would have been less - however some insurers don't like people having temporary policies on "their" car so be careful.

Price is likely to be slightly higher, on the hand, as I presume your daughter is 17-19. However learners are a pretty good insurance risk compared to newly qualified drivers in the same age bracket.

That's the way I'd do it, so I'd advise you look into it.

thanks all - bit the bullet and paid £450, so a slight saving!! Excess is a bit high and increased for the little un...but otherwise looks good.

This would have been cheaper for you.
