We've got a low cellar under the house and every time I go there I wonder could it be useful for growing mushrooms - the temps stay pretty constant around 14degC. Does anyone have experience of 'shroom production ??

I've never had any joy with those kits OR innoculated logs, so I've currently given up

I'm sure he means the convential kind that go with a full English rather than the Class A kind. Maybe.

The cream is very good for getting rid of those.

heard on the radio the other day, mushies don't care whether it's light or dark, they grow the same.
Producers only grow them in dark sheds because they don't heed to provide lighting, saves money.

So, grow them anywhere in the house.

What a magic thread

Yes, temperature and humidity control are more important. For one part, growing from a prepared kit it seems fairly easy but I'm trying to figure out these SIX stages of production which are defined - to start from scratch. In nature it seems to happen reliably - but variably and only once a year of course. It goes something like this:

1) collect right materials and compost them (incl watering and aerating)
2) sterilise the compost (so no competition) and inoculate with spore
3) raise the temp to 20degC for a couple weeks
4) lower temp to 14degC and continue

lots of watering and aerating throughout to get optimal conditions; oh bugger where's the 5th (6th !) stage
