Conversely, the skills associated with scrambling and climbing could allow one to access this spectacular environment without paying £65 for a ladder up the first 5 metres.

Via Ferrata British way!
Same in Lakes unfortunately. Seems to be national trend.

I never paid for parking at the base of the routes before moving to UK either..
