Hopefully get some advice from you guys, and with plenty of ex-pats and climbers in the UK from abroad someone must be able to help.
My uncle from New Zealand is coming back to the UK for six months and would ideally by a car for £2000-£3000 use it for six months, then sell it before returning home.
He is having trouble getting anyone to insure him. (He holds a New Zealand drivers licence, and an expired UK licence.
We thought that perhaps if the car was in my name and he was a named driver the insurance company would be ok with that but alas not.
Has anyone managed to find a reasonable way around this?
Is there any bargain long term car hire places about ( car hire places will still insure him).
I used to do the same when visiting the UK but a) you need kind family who can lend you their car and b) I'm pretty certain there is a limited amount of time you can do that for. Six months is possibly too long.
I'm thinking there'd be a reasonable workaround. For a start "they" can buy the car for Uncle so it isn't really their car and then, possibly, uncle re-applies for his UK license which I can't see being too onerous.
