Everyone seems to have forgotten that he preferred to be called The Artist, not that it'll matter to him now. RIP

Sad sad news. I was a big fan of his music in the 80s and 90s. Outstanding singer song writer and musician. The album Purple Rain being a particular favourite. Extract from Wiki below.

Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the£best-selling artists of all time.[10]£He won seven£Grammy Awards,[11]£a£Golden Globe,[12]£and anAcademy Award.[13]£He was inducted into theRock and Roll Hall of Fame£in 2004, the first year of his eligibility.[14]£Rolling Stone£has ranked Prince at number 27 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[15]

In reply to Baron Weasel:

IIRC that was all about deliberately destroying his commercial appeal in order to get out of his recording contract. He made himself a laughing stock at the time, but it was a calculated move rather than the ego fueled insanity everyone thought it was.

I was never a fan but I always thought he got too much stick for that.

Really shocked by this one.

One of the most talented artists of his generation. And criminally underrated as a musician by far too many people.

Lucky enough to see him live and he certainly didn't disappoint.

In reply to Yanis Nayu: Bloody hell. First Ronnie Corbett, now Prince. Someone better look after Peter Dinklage and Warwick Davis as soon there'll be no short people left!

He also wrote nothing compares 2 u of Sinead O'Connor fame and Manic Monday sung by the Bangles, the all female group who immortalised the famous climb on Trango Tower with their song Eternal Flame!

That'll be 6'30" for the best vocal performance I've ever heard and the remainder to wipe away the tears. Fans will get this already, new listeners will be struck by lightning. The very embodiment of genius.

I saw him in Birmingham on the Lovesexy tour - a fantastic show. Every time I listen to one of his albums I'm pretty much blown away by how good so many of his songs are.

For reasons I can't quite work out, Raspberry Beret is the sexiest song I've ever heard.

I see Gene Simmons (of Kiss) tweeted that Prince "was a giant"

Ordinarily I'd assume that was a joke in poor taste but I'm not sure Gene Simmons actually has a sense of humour.
