Or "Why aren't we reporting 85 year old's ascents on UKC"?

If age is an indicator of newsworthiness, why not offer a counter balance, as suggested in the thread title?
There have certainly been a few threads on this, for instance:

http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=562409&v=1#x7489190
http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=31583&v=1#x432201

But has there ever been a news item to herald an old-timer's ascent of something quite hard?

(btw - I declare an interest, rapidly approaching a qualifying age myself)

What are the newsworthy ascents?

Yes - missed that one. But 70? That's no age at all!

Shouldn't that be 85 year old crushes The Cad in awesome sending spree...?

I'm confused. Which octagenarian has climbed The Cad - could you post a link? I think it would definitely be newsworthy!

An 85 year old climbed a bold E6 at gogarth? Surely not. Colour me impressed if this is the case and sounds pretty newsworthy. Looks terrifying that route. We talking about something else?

I think Greenbanks was just trying to make a point. If I reach 85 and I'm still climbing I will be thinking along the lines of "I've got this far, I'm not going to throw it all away now just to get up a route" In fact at68 I'm thinking that way already and sold all my ice climbing gear last year

I'd like to think that there are some fit old 'uns who could certainly second the route. The likes of Boysen, for instance, look pretty chipper. Wonder whether, had he not left us, someone like Jimmy Jewell would jump at the challenge?

There is no news item, it was conjecture on my part.

Thanks - nice story (reasonably reported too - given the frailties of journalists regarding anything to do with climbing)

In reply to Greenbanks:

I would be prepared to second it.

I think Rowland Edwards is still leading E3s at 79.

Well the oldest we had Wonderland (http://www.ukclimbing.com/news/item.php?id=69926) was 70. It wasn't E6, but it was a first ascent and a traverse above the sea, so falling would have not been the best idea.

And for anybody who is a little older and is not sure they would be able to climb, John has just one piece of advice.

"Go for it," he said. "Just get out and do it. Do not hesitate."

You can guarantee it would be reported if it ever happened. But it won't (for obvious reasons).

Actually, he led the first ascent of a new E4 yesterday!
