Really exciting games and our British women are doing v well so far.It will be harder tomorrow when they play the Canadians. I hope that they beat them convincingly.
Go girls go!

I've never watched the ruby 7s before, but I thought it was really gripping. Not too many people crowding the pitch, lots of action and all over in a short space of time, ready for the next match. More please, BBC.
Just a shame the crowds were a bit thin.

Yes enjoyed the free flowing 7s.

Watching some equestrianism now with negligible crowds too when you think of the size in Greenwich Park and at Badminton etc. All a bit odd as my daughter was due to be involved and we did look at getting tickets for Rio 3 day eventing and the web site showed it sold out months ago.

It does seem that UK is about the best for support at major sporting events whether they be Tour stages, rugby, football, athletics, cricket etc. Participation could be better though.

So will the men's Rugby 7's be as exciting?
In reply to veteye:

I'm expecting some sort of slightly gloating facebook message from my daughter who lives in Williams Lake , BC and is now a Canadian Citizen ( though she's not ditched her British Passport yet but is serisously considering it following the Brexit result).

The city famously boasts that it is home to the second biggest 'Stampede' in Canada - but can now boast a member of the third best Ladies 7's team in the world. It's such a small place, I'd be surprised if my daughter does not know her!

I hope so - though I must admit some of the thrill of the women's rugby was just from seeing something new with players I don't know, whereas men's rugby (in it's normal format) isn't hard to come by. Are the 7s teams totally separate, or do they just pick from the national squads?

I went to the rugby 7s at Twikenham this year and it was brilliant fun. Most people in fancy dress, loads of nations represented, all the fans mixing and having a laugh, lots of booze, lots of events in and around the stadium, ZERO violence. On the pitch there were excellent displays of skill, athleticism, passion AND sportsmanship.

It was everything you'd hope that a football tournament WOULD be.

Apparently they are staged 2 1/2 hours from Rio with a complicated journey and a very late night return!

Then again it looks like quite a few venues in Rio are undersold. Including Beach Volleyball. Which is remarkable.

Undersold or the age old problem of block allocations taken up but not used (there was a problem with this in London)

I think you are projecting there. I love football and manage a football team but have been to several games where it has kicked off amongst fans. I've never seen anything like that in rugby.

As for player behaviour, well the FA's Respect program and it's codes of conduct for players AND parents even in the grassroots game, doesn't seem to have analogy in rugby.

But hey, keep twisting your own panties if you want to.

There is (sort of) - from Ilkley RUFC's website (not exactly the pinnacle of the game, despite the posh clubhouse):

"Referee Abuse

Ilkley RFC would like to bring to the attention of home and away visitors that abuse of the referee will not be tolerated at any Senior or Junior match. Any spectator found breaching this basic code of sporting decency will be asked to leave the grounds. Further action may be taken by Ilkley RFC management if deemed necessary."

Would you like to hazard a guess why the same comment keeps being made? Come on now, think hard...oh yes, that's right, it's because it's perfectly valid!

Maybe, but also there are a lot of sports of little interest to Brazilians, and there has been shambolic organisation resulting in people not being able to get into the stadia in time.
 Greenbanks 10 Aug 2016
In reply to John Ww:

Exactly my point; every time a rugby thread appears on here it is quickly populated by stuff implying that rugby crowds are better behaved, more sporting and courteous than football fans. Sadly this is shown to be historically accurate and is linked to the social standing of each game. My point is that it's been done to death - let's discuss Olympic rugby instead

Which is exciting to watch but doesn't seem like 7s as I remember it. The modern trend seems to be to go into contact and recyle the ball asap. Mind as a prop I didn't play a lot of 7s!!

It struck me that 7s rugby could be a good way of recycling used-up sprinters (or even vice-versa - one of the Kiwis seemed blisteringly fast. Woodman, I think)

I've read that that is kind of what happens in the US. SPrinters are attracted/lured to the lucrative NFL. Those that then don't make the NFL draft have been lured in to Rugby 7s with the promise of a lucrative career due to its inclusion in the Olympics.

Loved the fact that, while 3 quarter finals were free-flowing 21-15 try-fests, GB and Argentina slogged out a damp 0-0 that recalled a midwinter Munster mudbath

It was in fact a compelling match and my favourite battle of the tournament. There was great fellowship shown by both sets of players after the game.

Can't say it really did it for me ! I saw France eliminated by Japan last night and would gladly see Rugby 7's disappear from the Olympics, as well as golf, foot-ball and tennis !

In reply to BnB:

I must admit that it looks likely to me in the light of what you have said about the 0-0 match, that we may well end up in a match to contest for the Bronze medal. I just think that S Africa will be more confident and therefore stronger etc. I hope to be proven wrong.

As to P~mec, he is just a negative old-fashioned sport follower, and he is wrong.

Because you don't like the format, or because Japan beat France?

I like the fact that the game is so fast-paced, and that it can turn in moments - it was getting very tense and exciting last night toward the end of the 2nd half of GB vs Arg, I thought.

The Fijians train barefoot on the beach with coconuts. Their coach is something of a legend in Fiji. Read an interview with him where he said they eat green coconut before training and brown (or white) coconut after.

Should be a cracking final.

I find rugby really boring but could be persuaded to watch more of this format. Lots of fast action and none of the standing around / dead ball stuff which makes the 15-a side a big yawn.

Mind you, I'm not sure how we even got to the final based on what I saw......
In reply to Babika:
I thought exactly the same. Never seen a team game look so dynamic.

..... or a final of any game or any contest for first and second place look like such a one-sided total hammering!

Edit to say: a thrashing by a team from a country with the population of about ... Birmingham !

Delighted for Fiji, what a way to get your country's first Olympic medal. GB did well to get past South Africa, this side were only thrown together a few months ago, the final against the favourites was always going to be a huge task! Still, a silver is not shabby and Fiji get their fairytale ending.

Special mention to Japan as well.

'How many British rugby players does it take to bring down an Fijian?'
'How many have you got?'

I thought it was like watching a plucky year 8 team take on their merciless 6th form. I especially liked the benevolent head-pats the Fijians gave the British players from time to time, so they didn't get too disheartened
