Given the news item about Britain's strongest climbing couple I have to wonder if the Sellers/Shirrmacher pairing up is truly a stronger couple than John and Anne Arran?

Not forgetting Twid and Louise Thomas.

Nor the half-British Wills Young and Lisa Rands, or, less specialist, Stevie Haston and Laurence Gouault (whose name I almost certainly can't spell).

or Dave and Mary Birkett

bear in min sellers was done F8c at least, and E9. I don't think arran could match that.

Both the above couples pale into insignificance at the side of Ben and Jerry though.

the uk strongest climbing couple has to be Ben & Jerry...i mean come on !!!!

I'd say in the uk for bouldering it would have to be steve and dalvinder.

Wouldn't matt birch and his lady also make a fairly strong bouldering duo?

JA’s done E10 if you allow Dr Doolittle at that grade (and I don’t know any reason not to), and at least The Zone at E9 (again if you allow the grade, and I know there are murmurings). Also has a very decent on-sighting and adventure climbing record; not sure Nic S could match that although I expect he’s done a lot more than one’s heard about.

Wouldn’t have thought JA’d done 8c, tho’ I may be wrong, but then I don’t think that’s his game, tho’ I could be wrong there too.

Call it a draw, perhaps?
In reply to richard bradley @ work:

Precisely, Mr Bradley.

the original post was for "strongest", and i'd wager that arran wasn't done anything near F8c or 8c+ on bolts, so i'd still give it to sellars.

In reply to Anonymous: The news item was about husband/wife couple so most of those mentioned above don't qualify.

I reckon that Nic wins in sport & bouldering but John wins on trad. John also definately wins on nutter solo's and probably wins on big adventure stuff although Nic has done a bit of this.

Now Anne v Katherine. Daren't even think about that.

Not as far as i'm aware, but there was no stipulation for being married, was there? it was just 'couple'. Or are you just being old fashioned!

Well, in that instance, I think Dal and Steve should get married. Then I'll be correct.

What about Tim and Meilee Bertenshaw I think John and Nic are very different climbers and are infinite times better than everyone arguing on this forum and Anne and Kat are also very good in different areas so you should all get of the internet and go climbing...ps watch out for Tim and Meilee they'll be big!

It always seems a bit weird to be ranking and passing judgement on people in this kind of way. But I get the impression that JA is quite remarkable. His onsight solo of Jules Verne in Eldorado Canyon, back in the 80s, still strikes me as one of the most astonishing climbing achievements/ exercises in mental control of the last few decades.

In reply to JJJJ.: well exactly!
WTF are UKclimbing putting up a bogus statistic like "possibly the UK's hardest climbing husband and wife team" without considering the alternatives anyway? I want a graded list. Ian Parnell has that overall "How tough are you" grading system on PlanetFear... add wifes score to husbands score, overall highest scoring couple wins!
