Put it back - historical vandalism I'd call it. Can't wade through the whole thread but is it 100% certain it was 'placed' rather than natural? Of course the whole wall is quarried anyway!!

I'm errring toward a YES and Simon Lee is the one to replace it, ideally.

On one hand I think, well , we've moved on, big cams, sticky rubber, let's make it harder and remove the artificial protection and hold.

On the other hand, nice to look up at the route, spy the chockstone and say 'yeah Joe Brown climbed that fat crack, no big friends or sticky rubber then. He did it in rubber-soled gym shoes, fag hanging out of his gob, dropped a great big f*ck off rock to serve as is only pro' at half-height."

Hard as nails those old climbers from the black and white days.

Only there used to be more than one chockstone Mick, so if people are gonna stick to the 'historical' reasons arguement, by rights the other should be replaced too

Personally, i say f' it, its out, leave it that way - it'll never go back in exactly where it was before anyway, hence the character of the route is changed for good (if only slightly) whether you like it or not.........

I'm guessing, but he probably has a life already.
Sounds like he's quite happy with it.

As regards taking the chockstone out of RE - what an inspired move.

In reply to JohnBoy: If it is of any interest, I asked Warwick Baird (former Blue Mountains trad hard man and Australian hero type) as a totally impartial observer what he thought and he said (put on Australian accent) "That's just bloody vandalism put the thing back." He also said nasty things about the motives and parentage of the perpetrator, as would appear to be the Australian way.

Therefore Warwick Baird says PUT IT BACK.

Haven't read through all the threads on the issue but was thinking this morning that if we remove all objects inserted by human hands to protect our ascent then surely all bolts are going to have to go?
