ANSWER: THE NATIONAL RESOURCE TO YOUR OUTDOOR COMMUNITY
Yes that is right we are your national resource. If you are reading this it is because you are part of the outdoor community in some way.
Do you fit into the list of people we are here for?
That is the profound bit over with. The practical part is that Glenmore Lodge wants everybody to know that we do more than deliver skills courses and NGB training and assessments.
We host endless meetings and workshops for the outdoor community, we act as consultants to government and organisations in the outdoor industry and we give feedback and ideas to product manufactures to help them develop more effective and functional kit. These are just some of the ways we keep our team busy.
We are open to ideas that will help to improve, maintain or develop all things associated with environment and adventure sport.
UPDATES FOR WINTER 09Everybody will agree we have had a fantastic winter already! We are still in the heart of it and we have courses and events going on all the way through to the end of March. We would just like to highlight a couple of events from this year so far that deserve special mention.
MC of S – Student Winter Skills Courses 2009
Sixty students from thirteen Scottish university and college clubs took part in a winter skills weekend at Glenmore Lodge in February. Under the watchful supervision of their instructors, the students practiced ice axe and crampon skills, navigation, avalanche awareness and a host of other essential skills. This is the age groupd that have all the hunger and energy to be out there in all conditions. That is why it is so important that they have the basic skills to keep themselves safe.
Glenmore Lodge is always proud to work in partnership with the MC of S on such worthwhile projects. It was a very successful weekend and thanks are due to all the instructors for their hard work. Roger Wilde deserves special mention for being the consistent reason these events happen
BMC - International Week organised by the BMC
Yusuke Sato and Jack Geldard, UKClimbing.com Editor, on the International Meet
The meet involved 40 international guests from 27 countries from as far apart as Argentina, Canada, Iran, Japan (Yusuke Sato), Russia, South Africa and Ukraine.
Additionally, 40 volunteer UK hosts showed our guests the delights of Scottish winter climbing and hill walking.
All hosts are experienced Scottish winter climbers and hill walkers and included such high profile climbers as Dave MacLeod, Zoe Hart, Simon Richardson, Andy Turner, Es Tressider, Dave Hollinger, Rich Cross, Jack Geldard, Stu MacAleese, Alan Hinkes and Ian Parnell.
Although the conditions were warm, these people came to get out and play and that is exactly what they did. So many routes were climbed that week both in the Corries and on the Ben including: Good Friday Climb, Tower Ridge, Tower Scoop, Comb Gully, Green Gully, Glover's Chimney, Indicator Wall, Smith's Route, among others.Additionally, Simon Richardson and Zoe Hart (USA) did a new two pitch route appropriately named The Alpine Princess (IV, 4).
Some teams decided to opt for a dry-tooling day instead and went to Birnham. Routes done included Fast and Furious, Too Fast Too Furious, Roofilicious, Va Va Vroom, Happy Hooker, Groovilicious and Bonzai.
A fun dry tooling competition was organised on the tower in the Glenmore Lodge car park. Routes were set by Andy Turner and there were some awesome diplays of climbing from guests and hosts alike. The top spot went to Pavel Vritik from the Czech Republic. Prizes courtesy of DMM and Rab.
Guest speakers included Zoe Hart from USA who gave a highly entertaining talk on Stories from an Alpine Princess. In the evening Pavel Vritic from the Czech Republic showed his film about new climbing in the high Tatra. Dave Macleod did an excellent presentation and had some top climbers from the Petzl climbing team come to see it including Ueli Steck...no pressure Dave. Two magnificent illustrated presentations from our Japanese guests. Kei Taniguchi told us about her audacious first ascent of the much admired and sought after South East Face of Kamet. She called the route Samurai Direct. Asia Piolet D'Or winner, Yusuke Sato, gave an awesome presentation about the amazing first ascent
Good attitude meant that difficult conditions did not stop a superb week. Our thanks and congratuations to Becky and and Nick from the BMC for doing such a great job organizing it.
