...one of the mountaineering highlights of 2012...Days before the start of the London Olympics, two middle-aged British mountaineers, Sandy Allan and Rick Allen, completed the awe-inspiring Mazeno Ridge, hailed since as among the very best British mountaineering achievements in the last 25 years.
Lindsay Griffin - BMC
"Sandy Allan and his climbing partner Rick Allen were at their last camp below the summit of Nanga Parbat, the world's ninth highest mountain, when they gathered together the food they had left.
After 14 days on the vast unclimbed Mazeno Ridge - the longest in the Himalayas - it amounted to a packet of McVitie's Digestives biscuits.
A lighter they had taken with them had stopped working, its flint worn through. The only spare, they realised, was in the pocket of another member of the team who, exhausted and demoralised, had already decided to descend."
WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Rick Allen on Mazeno Ridge at Rheged: 2nd Dec
Now is your chance to see and hear a first hand account of this amazing achievement as Rick Allen will be appearing at Rheged in Cumbria on the 2nd December.

Twenty years ago this year Doug with Sergey Efimov and two Sherpa friends made the very first attempt at climbing the Mazeno Ridge. In a four day alpine style push they managed to climb only one third of the Ridge. He returned again in 1995 with Rick and Sandy, and again failed to complete the ridge.
In July "While Great Britain was excelling at the Olympics, Rick Allen claimed a world first on Nanga Parbat in the Himalayas. Now the story of the heroic feat in conquering an unclimbed ridge can be told for the first time" (The Observer).
Rick and Sandy, now 58 and 56 years old, returned 17 years later. They not only climbed all the way along the ridge and up to the summit of the ninth highest mountain in the world Nanga Parbat (8,125m) but then they descended north down the Diamir Face to make a complete traverse of the mountain and the most demanding climb made by British mountaineers in recent times.
This really was a huge commitment and an incredible ordeal for veteran climbers Sandy and Rick, who took 14 consecutive days to make the complete 8 mile traverse - the last three without food or a stove to melt snow for water.
So come along to this World Premiere and listen to the 'Bradley Wiggins of climbing' describe one of the most amazing climbing feats of all time - one of the major goals of mountaineers achieved.
