Astrid** HVS 5a
[Atmosfear - descending into the Black Zawn to start Astrid, 3 kb]20m.

Rockfax Description
Vast amounts of character, good climbing and an exciting abseil approach make this a memorable climb. The groove and crack-line in the centre of the wall gives steady climbing in impressive surroundings. Good gear. © ROCKFAX

spent ages on the belay so was cold at the start, then got stuck in some awkward position that I couldn't move from. Once I'd come off there was no way of getting back to the route some I went up our ab rope instead

very cool route. Sustained 5a moves to half height then eases. Not an easy HVS tick. Gear and rock is superb throughout.

Abbed in a realised how wet the crux was. so pre placed a nut. set off for the route and could get over the wet holds so pulled on the gear. rest of the route was fine. Enjoyed the atmosphere and will be back. surprised it was wet given it was such a hot day.

Wow, really good fun. Thanks to the previous climber's stuck offset nut near the bottom as it prevented my leader falling on my head at the belay!

What a fantastic adventure !!!!! Been wanting to do this for ages and it fully surpassed all expectations. There's currently a DMM offset 10 jammed in the crack on the wall by the crux (it's not been there long )

Very wet lower section after all the rain. Dampness in the air made it quite greasy. Burley route taht just didn't suit me. 5a moves but just grunty. Very atmospheric with a bit of swell at the bottom!

Quality climbing with a mad abseil entry. Give yourself plenty of time to sort this bit out and the hanging belay. It all seems a bit of a faff for 20 meters of climbing but it is just about worth it. Good climbing all the way up with the crux getting past the very awkward flake just up from the belay. Hard work and definately 5b in my opinion! After that it is easier but still has the odd hard move, but with good, largish gear. Defo HVS 5b!

What a great route! Very atmospheric, exposed and good climbing, with lots of gear and serious without ever getting too desperate. Hard for the grade, though!
Alexandre Buisse - Lead O/S - 26/Jun/10

Managed to peel of 10 foot above the belay and went swimming. Should not have grabbed the ab-rope, jumaring with rope burns wasn't that much fun. Well I came looking for something ecxiting, guess I got it.

Pulled off loose hold, fell back, gear ripped and landed on Rich, breaking his left leg ('though didn't know it at the time). I climbed out and belayed Rich on tight ropes and prusik loops, escaping the helicopter ride. Feel really bad about it. A real adventure to cap the weekend

Got stuck in the large crack/flake about twelve feet up. Pete climbed it on a top rope but didn't place any gear so as I peeled off I was left hanging in space and had to prussick my way out.

Slightly ropey feeling after Old Rosie in the Square and Compass; mega abseil after which Chester chucked his belay plate in the drink, I did the same with some wires but he caught them! Difficult crux in 1st third, threw up in my mouth, cracked a rib. Had to have a little sleep afterwards. Memorable.

Argh! Got jammed in the groove/flake about 10 feet from the belay. It was really awkward, wet, greasy and slopey. Apparently, I should have reached round onto the front of the large flake where I would have found some good holds. Hmmm....... I couldn't seem to find anything good round there.

I was scared just seconding it! Proper sea cliff climbing with an ab in to a hanging belay. Atmospheric to say the least. Hardest thing I've been near on rock, and tbh, can't see myself ever being able to do it on lead. My head is too far away and I'm not bothered enough to get it right. It does feel like proper climbing though. Not like all this poncing up Severes. HArd work, scary and exhilarating.
