Via Dolorosa Variations >>

32m. A long and wandering trip up the huge buttress. Start below a battered holly and climb very slippery rock (crux) to the roof. Escape out left passing the obstinate holly to ledges (possible stance) then climb to the huge roof. From the left edge of this climb up to runners then reach a flake on the wall of the gully, finish out right on the front of the buttress. <font color="red">The left-hand line on the topo is the seldom climbed indirect start (HS 4a) to this route. </font> © ROCKFAX

Done as 3 pitches! A nice route the upper crux can be protected by an average largeish hex and an OK cam, moves much easier than the look. First pitch has a couple of stiff moves in it now it's polished.

Thought it was fairly easy for VS 4c and found it much more fun (less scary!) than Valkyrie. A big choice of quality lines once you get past the holly, I went up on the right and then hand traversed across at mid height to belay on the ledge at the top left. Last pitch looks much harder than it is & is also very enjoyable, presuming you work out the holds!

A lovely evening. Vanessa was very pleased to do this, it has been on her hit-list for a while. She led the first pitch (now getting very polished) and I led the flake, not forgetting the finish up the face. I was a bit dismissive when this was upgraded from Severe, but with the polish it's starting to justify its VS 4c grade. A cracking climb, interesting and varied.

Not sure I agree with the guidebook "Best VS on grit" but it most certainly a fine route. Done in two pitches. Ian lead the first two, I lead the last one. Fantastic finish up the front of the buttress and sitting in the hyperbowl at the top. Take plenty of large nuts/cams to set up a belay.

Polished slippy slab start was certainly no easy way to start the day... but what a climb, single rope one pitch. Loved move under overhang with hand traverse after twin cracks, which is a worthwhile if harder variation. Blind flake traverse took me a while to pluck up courage, just so I could immediately proclaim 'It's easy when you actually do it.'

I led the first pitch, Richard led the second. The end was quite scary as it started blowing a gale at the top and were unable to see or hear each other at all. Topped out to find Richard (belaying) huddled up in a ball freezing his bo***x off! ("Hurry up I'm freezing!") An image I will always remember.

Pete led it in one pitch but we had to be a bit clever with one of the ropes (I had to climb the wrong side off the holly tree trunk by hanging from it and swinging round!) Lovely climb but Pete missed the final part right out on the face and set up belay on the ledge above the flake, doh!

great outing.started on polished holds then just about managed to sling the bower via a layback.good jamming in twin cracks above, big bridging move gets you on ledge(good belay spot).Then round the corner to what must be the best/scary move on the climb, reaching out for the flake. great climb

Alternative, easier final pitch) 1. 18m. Start as for Via Dolorosa up the narrow polished slab and flop inelegantly over the roots of the holly bush to reach the ledge. Traverse left along the ledge until you reach the left-most crack (not the 2 parallel cracks taken by Via Dolorosa). A pleasant layback crack takes you up to the block belay near the ar�te. 2. 15m. Traverse left and up over the short corner, and continue traversing left along the ledge until you are in the chimney. Climb up the short chimney to good protection at the top, then tuck in your tummy and wiggle through the opening on the left, which is barely big enough to take a climber and lead gear. Easy belay at the top.
