[Tim Exley on Needle Arete, Dewerstone, 2 kb]

3 pitches. A finely positioned and exposed route taking the central arete of the buttress, finishing at the needle. Start low down on the front face amongst the trees beneath a very short boot-wide layback crack. 1) Climb the crack and easy slab to a ledge with some big trees. This pitch is easily avoided by walking to the ledge from the right. 2) Using a flake climb to the wide crack just to the left of the arete. Follow this and the awkward corner above. Traverse right to a tree belay. 3) Climb above the tree on good holds until some moves left around the arete access a corner/groove. Climb to the needle © ROCKFAX

Lead this climb with Pen Farthing on toprope next to me (instructing). Was a pretty easy climb, went across the face of the aret instead of under it (fun move). Rockfax calls it a multipitch, did it in one but started at the belay for the second pitch. Abseil retreat was awesome!

I led pitches 1+2 in one, C led to the top, I seconded via the step round (to remove gear), then reversed and took the thin crack over the nose (The Camel). A really good route, even the unprepossessing pitch 1 is great fun. Quite tough for the grade.

An excellent climb, if a little damp and mossy on the first pitch. Wonderful views and sense of exposure by the tree above the spike. Tough for the grade I thought, though there is plenty of pro where it matters. Best combined with Gentle Layback. WATCH OUT FOR HUNGRY SQUIRRELS.

If you're a new leader, it might be best not to start this one at 7pm like we did... first pitch lulls you into a false sense of security compared with the latter part of the 2nd pitch. Oh, and don't get your rope jammed on the 3rd either... nice climbing though :)
