Rockfax Description
A long, diagonal expedition crossing the Morning Slab that is serious for both leader and second. Start by scrambling to a tree next to a yellow crumbling wall.
1) 4a, 20m. Climb easily to a cave and move right up a slab then pull into a groove on the right. Move up this and its right wall to an iron spike. Pull up the short steep wall to Breakfast Ledge and a withering tree belay plus low back-up nuts.
2) 4a, 27m. Move right to a vegetated corner and head out along a grass ledge before moving rightwards up the slab to a good, long foot ledge and peg. Shuffle along the ledge till it fades and then climb up the slab to bolt and tree belays.
3) 18m. Climb rightwards to a crack and climb this to the Lunchtime Ledge. © Rockfax

UKC Logbook Description
Tree belay at the start of pitch-2/end pitch-1 has gone to be replaced by two bolts.

Ticklists: Rockfax SW select - Avon gorge routes, West Country Climbs, Avon sub-VSes, Avon gorge road to ruins HVS, George's Evening Gorge Ticklist.

Really good route. Can't believe I haven't done it before. The first pitch had led me to believe it was 4c so I was releaved to hear the route is 4a before starting the traverse!

I heard it took a couple of Yanks 20 days to free the Dawn Walk, so keen to give it a go myself and Mike set off not knowing what to expect. Day 1 - Mike led the first pitch, it was vegetated in places, and loose in others, care was needed if we were ever going to free climb this big wall. Day 2 - I led the crux pitch, the traverse was in good condition, though gear was sparse, a good peg is in place right where you need it. Not sure if we were off route or not, but it didn't feel like 5.14d. Day 3 - The midday sun baked the slab which was not good for friction, though Mike led the final pitch with ease. We topped out without the hero's welcome we were expecting, I guess having already been freed this feat was old news.

Awesome fun, linked with Bob's Climb. First pitch was pretty wet and went above, not under the bulge by mistake so had to back up, fun thereafter. Start of second pitch was wet so hung out, did a spot of gardening and watched the sun come down the gorge and dry out most of the slab just as I set off on the main traverse . Great pitch to shiny chains and lovely stance. Fun final pitch. Liz seconded all pitches like a boss.

Retreated after the first pitch. Misled by the CC guidebook which suggested the route started from the Breakfast Ledge, which is actually the end of the first pitch. Having felt the 'scrambly approach' rather tough, we backed off without realising we'd done a pitch.

Led P2. After the horrible scramble to the start of the route, it actually becomes pretty good. The first pitch is really the crux and the run-out on the second pitch is nowhere near as bad as I had expected. Started just after rain, finished in the dark. P 1&3 - Pleb P 2 - Me Didn't spot the bolts to realise I was meant to go upwards and carried on traversing until reaching some saplings just above and left of the belay of Sinister and Clarion. The last few metres before the belay, after the ledge was long gone, felt a fair bit harder than 4a for sure but still really nice climbing and fairly exciting.

Was mostly dry by 3pm, damp and mud on the ledges detracted from the enjoyment, still a nice route. The 4a move on pitch 1 is a delicate step around a wide rib, hanging from a jug. The best bit is pitch 2, a long traverse under the massive roof. A narrow ledge is attained early and followed, disconcertingly downwards, until it fizzles out, whereupon some moves up the slab gain ancient rusty bolts. Protection is not great and you need to trust your shoes, mud and damp didn't help. I used the bolts as back-up for some wires and a fat sling around the tree. Pitch 3 finishes easily up an obvious crack to lunchtime ledge. Topped out with Direct Route, which is always a pleasure.

Dropped friend trying to get it out of rock (Louise had given up trying to retrieve it) so had to abseil down to find it. Exited Lunchtime Ledge via 'Bob's Climb'. Second pitch is airy traverse with _no_ protection. As bad for 2nd as leader, so Louise did v.well. After this the Devil's Slide traverse was a piece of cake. Did again with Alex on 20/07/97. His first time in Avon Main area and meant to be a simple way up to lunchtime ledge to dump our sacs. Alex, however, was very uncertain of route and spent a long time over it. He also did breakfast ledge to lunchtime ledge in 1 pitch, finishing just as the 50m double rope ran out!
