Late start after overnight storms. First summit of this year's Alpine week (OK, the only summit, it rained the rest of the time). I think I should claim a PD+ or AD- for this in view of the state of the glacier descent - 55deg hard ice all the way down into the crevasse system. Fine once I got an ice screw in though. Brilliant day out ending up back in Arolla at 10.30pm.

Normal route in ascent then came down the winter route in descent and did some crevasse rescue skills in a convenient slot on the way down. With Chris Forrest (JSMTC) and Dave ? as part of AML assessment. Weather great, views fantastic.

Left campsite at half-midnight after driving from Leeds, walked to the ladder down to the glacier before the hut and both nearly fell asleep. Had a nap in the bothy bag for 6 hours... Snacked, lounged, rested, then ran away before the people walking back to Arolla from the hut reached us in the morning. Still, helped the acclimatisation!

First Apline Lead! Woohoo! Weather was perfect - not a cloud in the sky all day, which took a bit of the pressure off. Easy up to the col, rocky ridge route-finding and scrambling straightforward, looks harder than it is. Snow slopes easy to saddle - not very steep. Final ridge to summit quite exciting - especially the last little climb to the top. Moved together all the way. Need to get a shorter/lighter rope! Descent quite tedious reversing everything, but overall a nice route and all the more exciting as it was my first Alpine lead!
