Excellent weather today. Climbing conditions were great with styrofoam snow and good ice. The ice was well hacked and stepped out which made it a touch easier. I led 2, Dave, 1,3 & I let him do 4 for me after my calves felt like they were on fire. My first ice route on the Ben, brilliant!

Split it into 5 pitches. John won rock, paper, scissors so took the first two pitches which he lead like a beast despite having to wait behind a party of two at both belays. We then switched leads and I took the next two. These were pretty epic with the 4th pitch wiping me out, though thanks so it being pretty hacked out and screwing into pre-screwed holes I managed to get to the top. For the final pitch we swapped again, something I was very glad of, and John took us up and over the cornice.

Day of work. Wild on the walk-in, but the gully was sufficiently sheltered, and amazingly, it was quite still on the summit plateau. Oh, great climbing, and hooked all the way.

Did Not Finish doesn't really sum it up. we didn't fucking start! I was literally 10m away from the first belay and then i got smacked on the left cheek by a piece of ice, big gash, deep, ended up with three stitches. Fuck! it would have been my first proper winter route and it was good conditions. So pissed off! Oh well it's not like its going anywhere...

Very enjoyable route with good protection. Calves were aching on the last pitch so I used just 1 screw 10m above the belay then did the last 30 in a quick run out. Nick wasnt too happy but you could see he felt the same pain when he topped out. The iron hard neve was really tearing at or legs by this point. Fab weather and conditions though.

Great route for a quick nip up the Ben. Colin led in good style but had a bit of a contretemps with a Derwent Hill instructor who was belaying a rather slow novice who was chucking down a lot of ice onto our heads: this instructor (best left as anon) wouldn't allow Colin to share the belay - who had run out 50m of rope with no runners so wasn't best pleased! One short, steep ice pitch - but not a grade iv surely?
