A brilliant day out! First winter tick of the year. Not the best conditions and we were swimming at some points! Never the less a good route.

This was the kind of day where it would be very easy to stay in the car, make excuses and then slip back down the A5 and head back east. But I managed to motivate myself and ignore the wind and head off up the path to Cwm Lloer. The stream was raging, the mud was up and the slog was on, but my mood improved gradually as I climbed up and I knew that I had made the right decision. The upper slopes were mainly white and very promising, though the temperature was actually quite warm. The lea of Pen Yr Ole Wen meant that I was in the stillness of Ogwen and the promise of some fun in the gullies spurred me on. So to the Lyn where there was no ice, some slush, some crusty snow and a lot of water. Yet the gullies looked ok. I took on water, stared at the routes and then went for it. Find a good way up, mind the wind on the ridge and get down safely. Happy days.

Long, enjoyable route. Steep at the top. Not many gear placements. Shame about the tragedy which occurred on nearby Hourglass Gully just before we started the route. Very sad to witness the climber's limp body being winched into the helicopter. Made us focus even harder on the climb ahead.

Led steep and slightly thin ice pitch variation, intense but short lived. Seconded small ice flow on rigth at the narrowing of the gully, a worthwhile diversion. Soloed the final slopes.
