My dad had astonishing faith in my abilities - rather than teach him or my sister to belay I set up a sort of autobelay system, where if things got tricky I could grab the rope. Cable-laid of course, so had the potential to be quite grippy. Note the red flash gym shoes, a la Arthur Dolphin.
