Tim was known as "Jockey Jim" because he always wore a black showjumpers helmet - it was mainly for effect but I guess it did provide some protection.
Note that Jim has stuffed an old pair of socks down the back of his kletterschuhes because they are too big and he is trying to push his toes to the front !
