Now there's a guy you just want to go climbing with - crazy adventures guaranteed!

Another super pic Paul - and yes Mick, George would be a great companion on any adventure. George and I go back a long way and in 1967 he joined Mo, Davey Jones and myself when we drove to the Alps in my A-35 van. There are many fantastic stories of that trip but unfortunately I don't have photos to back them up.
George, Nancy and daughter Sarah made me welcome when I first moved to Canada and then we went our separate ways. George built a cabin near Golden BC and I went on to be a fairly successful aerospace engineer in Montreal. I called him a couple of times a year to keep in touch, and, while I was working hard George had just returned from a couple of months in Mexico !
Of all the people I have known I think that George was the most relaxed and at one with himself - and that includes me !

Yes one super laid back bloke .. on and off the rock.

I often wonder what happened to George. I remember him in the Dolomites 1966-7 I think with Denny Moorhouse doing lots of powerful FBAs eg the Squirrels ArĂȘte.

As far as I know he was killed in a helicopter crash quite some time ago.

Correct Paul - tragically George and his daughter Sarah did die in a helicopter crash in the late nineties. As I referred to above George was his own person who lived his life his way and worked when he needed to. One job that suited him was taking snow samples in the mountains for BC Hydro - it paid well, he was transported by helicopter and it only involved a few days a month.
Writing this makes me quite sad !

I was briefly with George and Denny in the Dolomites on a MA course (1966/7?) He taught be to tie on with a bowline below the 2nd Sella Tower in my walking boots. A few days later he hauled me and one or two others up the Diagonal on the Cinque Dita (V). He gave me the start to 50 yrs, and more(?), climbing. I remember him well with gratitude though we never met again.

I am George's sister and want to thank you so much for this photo as I don't have many of him climbing. You are right, he was so laid back he was horizontal. He was (and still is) my hero.

I climbed a lot with Chris Boulton who lived in Deniolen in the 60's staying with him at weekends. On one day a party of us went to Tremadoc and did a mass ascent of The Struggler. This was easily led by George but I found it tough at the time. I went second and felt under pressure as I was being watched by the rest of the party. As well as Chris Al Harris also followed the route. Didn't know George well but he seemed a really nice guy and had the respect of all present on that day.

Was a brilliant 3 days with George ... just a super fun chap, on and off the rock.

Thank you for posting the photo.
The helicopter crash was 27 years ago today (26 April 1996).
