There's some logic to the Merino ad - guy wears Merino, he doesn't smell so he gets a naked woman cuddling him. Reasonable way of selling shirts to guys.
The Bolderini shoe ad just seems like confused marketing, it's designed to appeal to men but men don't buy women's shoes.

I remember reading about a study which found that people were more likely to respond to an ad for house insurance if it had a picture of an attractive woman on it. The effect was similar regardless of whether the respondents were male or female. They also found no effect (from respondents of either sex) if the ad included a picture of a handsome man.
So I think the logic is as simple as attractive woman = more sales.
