Hello UKC Travel Guide types,

You're a well-traveled bunch and have made plenty of useful suggestions before, so here goes... it looks like I'm off to Milan on a work trip at the start of June, and will have the weekend free.

Apart from Da Vinci's Last Supper, and staying within the city itself, what's good to see and do (and how impeccably groomed am I going to have to somehow make myself? :-/)

Don't miss the Duomo, which is quite incredible.

I've got a feeling you have to book in advance for the last supper - no idea how, but I know we realised we wouldn't be able to just turn up and see it.

And I think the Duomo was covered in scaffolding (as was La Scala) which may be why I don't remember another incredible about it.

It is a very fashion conscious city - and I'm scruffy at the best of times - but I wasn't escorted out of any of the hundred or so posh shops my wife dragged me into. Even the ones that were so posh they only had 3 garments on display (and 4 assistants!).

Not as interesting as Rome or Venice, but certainly a lot nicer than Naples. However if you can get out of the city I'd really recommend Bellagio up on Lake Como - I was very tempted to spend £75 on a tie, and would have done apart from the fact that I never wear a tie, but it really was a thing of beauty.

But don't hire a car and try and drive out of Milan on a Friday evening - terrifying !!

Was rather disappointed with Milan (expensive and grubby except the very centre) but Bergamo, nearby, was nice.

Take the train out to Colico, 1:27, on Lake Como, or somewhere on the way . Stunningly beautiful. We changed trains there on the way from Milan to Chiavenna and the Bregaglia.

You might be able to see The Last Supper by taking a chance and turning up at the church. I went to Milan 18 months ago during the summer to a conference. Two of the people at the conference got in to see it immediately; I went the next day and decided it wasn't worth my time to wait around for an hour or two. The museum nearby had a display of constructed machines designed by Da Vinci and a reproduction of The Last Supper.

The Duomo is quite spectacular. I really enjoyed the art gallery next to it on the same square. Otherwise the city was dirty and noisy.

+1 for the San Siro. Fantastic atmosphere and a fraction of the price you'd pay in England.
