I would like to become a climbing instructor but how do you do this?

Good link, but bear in mind that working up to the level (and renumeration) that Tim is on will take a lot of time, experience and possibly other less inspiring jobs!

The bit that hits the nail on the head though is the exhortion to go out and climb and mountaineer as much as possible, as any award you work towards is experience-based.

Do you want to just work at walls or with groups at crags, or do you aspire to being a mountaineering instructor with a wider remit to teach and lead on more complex and wild terrain? If you are not already a hillwalker think about getting into it as this allows you onto the ML scheme, which is the starting point for the higher-end instructor awards.

Talk to the staff at your local wall; they will be able to judge if you are ready for the CWA and/or SPA schemes and may be able to arrange for you to help with their groups in support of this.

Are they the qualifications a climbing centre would look for?

If you are only interested on working at a wall just now - the wall could either set you up for a site specific or better still, take the new Climbing Wall Award - detsails of which can be found here
