WTF!!

The Spice of Llanberis thread got me thinking about past meals there and the most memorable have been BBQ's in the Nant Peris campsite. This has usually involved lamb rump steaks....which has been very nice apart from the fact the lamb has come from New Zealand.

Is it actually cheaper to import the meat from the other side of the world than get it locally? We only shopped at Tesco and Somerfield but that is only because we didn't notice any independant butchers around.

Any thoughts?

Apparently Welsh lamb is fetching top dollar at the moment keeping the prices which are already kept artificially high, even higher.
It is indeed cheaper to import lamb from New Zealand than buy Welsh lamb.

Crazy but true.

In reply to Morgan Woods: There has historically been a net flow of manufactured goods from the northern hemisphere to the southern. This means empty boats heading back north which has meant cheap shipping for NZ producers.

In reply to Morgan Woods: It is, but generally lamb is quite a bit older. The wife won half a lamb in a race, when we got it, it was indeed half a lamb, should have seen the size of the tiny ribcage. Lovely though.

a bloke on the radio the other year stated that all NZ lamb was slaughtered under Halal conditions. It gave me something to think about.

In reply to tom valentine: Mmmmmm - not sure about that. Most freezing works have Halal facilities but I don't know that they're all killed that way.

In reply to Morgan Woods: British/Welsh/English lamb is always more expensive due to the quality, the French and Italians import massive amounts of lamb from all over Britain. On th continent quality is very important,in Britain we're not as bothered as long as it is cheap! in reality we have very little interest in supporting skilled hill/plain farmers and specialist butchers. This is why Tesco and other supper markets have such high profits. As for lamb being in season yes it is and is always in season, but now the spring lamb(18 week old lambs.) is in which is the most highly regaurded, and the most expensive on the loin £20kg on the leg £18kg!
Please buy british meat even if you have to eat less or the cheaper cuts if not just to support local producers but also to keep skilled workers!

The French buy all our lamb thus pushing the price up.

Good Welsh lamb is fantastic.

My butcher told me yesterday that he currently is paying about 100 quid per animal, so he obviously has to charge more. But he makes up for it by selling local free range chicken for a fiver.

I'm sure that you can buy British produce in Tescos/Somerfield, you just need to look for a Union Jack or Little Red Tractor symbol on.
Admittedly it's still not from a butchers, but at least it'll be British.

Next time you in Wales - good butcher in Llanwrst, organic lamb farmer in Ogwen valley & best of all, if you are travelling into North Wales up the A5 there is the very wonderful Rhug Estate shop just outside Corwen, who do the best sausages in the world (pork, honey and mustard)
there ya go
