I'm sure I can remember watching that live broadcast but I would have been less than one year old in summer 1957. Are you sure it wasn't 1967?

It was in July 1967, if it had been 57 it would be the 60th anniversary

Yes, the ascent was in 1967. It was a major outside broadcast for the BBC attracting an audience of millions over the three days that it was shown.
