[The Girdle, 3 kb]4 pitches. One of the classic VS routes of the Peak which provides a great outing with amazing situations for the grade. Not a good route for a busy weekend but fun and fairly dry (certainly the hardest bits) in light rain. The long version starts up Doggone Groove but you can miss the first traverse pitch by starting up The Chopper. 1) 4b, 30m. Climb Doggone Groove to a belay on the left. 2) 4b, 42m. Traverse the break to a tricky descent to easy ground. Belay above Match of the Day. 3) 4a, 35m. Traverse into the gully then out to reach a yew tree above Queer Street. The scenery is starting to get better. 4) 5a, 30m. Follow the break past many belays and threads, with a hard move above Ceramic, to a great hanging stance. 5) 4c, 35m. Keep going across the groove of Alfresco, tricky crossing the left wall, until you reach the tree/lower-off of Mortlock's Arete. Abseil off - 20m to the ground. © ROCKFAX

A brilliant adventure. We climbed with a backpack and perfectly timed it across just as it began to get dark. I led pitches 2 and 4. The 4th and 5th pitches have some phenomenal climbing in some amazing positions. Thoroughly recommended.
gavinpeach - AltLd O/S - 22/Jul/14 with Scott

A real adventure for an evening! Led 1,3,5... An okay start with a great final 2 pitches!

Did 3 of the 5 pitches before abbing off as it got dark Great fun, felt like an adventure rather than a normal evening's cragging. Nice rock but vegetated with mice and lice

Unfortunately due to starting a bit late and faffing from both us and another team we had to bail one pitch from the end. Will definitely be going back to get it clean! Very nice traverse!

With Bunny, Full length, very, very dirty in palces, mostly dry. Pretty good though, gets better as you go along, building up to the last pitch. Great to get back into the "lost world" atmosphere of cheedale.
Brannock - AltLd - 26/May/13

OMG this climb is a proper adventure: river wading, jungle bashing, traversing, abseiling; what more can you ask for! John lead the first, third, fifth and sixth pitches whilst I lead the second and fourth. The main reason for us breaking it into so many pitches was due to my inability to gauge how far I had climbed each pitch and short changing myself each time. By the last pitch I was shattered and had pulled my right arm and despite talks of abseiling off I persevered and followed Johns sterling lead of the last pitch. I got as far as corner, still with the on-sight, despite some cheeky self protection techniques involving two cow tails and the in situ threads, before slipping off on a blank section after the corner making ample use of the final thread with an arm hooked through it for confidence!
MPSBunny - AltLd - 26/May/13 with John Brannock

ross brinson - Lead - 16/Apr/13 with Hannah Watson

Only did the first two pitches, well made them in to three! A lot of soil top of the first pitch(ie the additional second) made things a bit shakey and dirty. Can only vote on basis of the first two. Note, barrel on the abb screw gate disintergrated, could do with some tat replacement.

Led P2&4. In the rain, but after a dry spell. I can imagine it would be a whole different proposition if it was seeping more. Made it hard to start with by having my feet in the break so took a decent tumble down the undergrowth on P2. The fifth pitch seemed harder than the fourth. Some fun with the ropes and the wade in made for a memorable day.
treg - AltLd dog - 10/Sep/12 with Dan Osbaldeston

lead pitches 1, 3 and 5. it was raining lightly throughout the day and we didnt even notice it most of the time. matt took a little slip at the start of the 2nd pitch into the undergrowth, other than that no problems occured. P5 had some nice moves on the left wall, bit of sludgy seep before that to overcome though which was fun. great day out all in all, exept for the little issue with ropes at the end, creatively overcome though.
DanOsb - Lead O/S - 10/Sep/12 with matt treg

awesome route, if a bit polished in places. led access pitch via doggone groove only as have completely lost my trad limestone head

Full version but lead the traverse in three rather than four pitches. Massively enjoyable with some very photogenic views of leader/second. If only I'd brought my camera! Pretty much bone dry after a week of dry weather. Bring sandals for the river crossing.

Was very wet in places, and had to lower off in the middle of pitch 5. Lots of disgusting birds nests in break which was all mixed with the water to make a toxic smelling cocktail.
cheeky - AltLd O/S - 26/Jun/12 with Mark Philipson

climbed after heavy rain. pitch 1 wet and slipery. pitches 2,3,and 4 fairly dry and sheltered with some wet streaks. had to abandon pitch 5 as too wet and slippery.climbing good fun to do a big route in peaks. quite vegetated and had to wade the river to get in and out. top adventure!

Climbed on a single rope, it was too short to ab off the tree, so we continued the traverse (Rarely repeated I suspect) fighting manfully through amazonian jungle, with carnivorous wildlife delighted to feed on us, and eventually appearing somewhere and a thruchy scramble to the top.
