Black and Tans Variations >>

30m, 2 pitches. A classic expedition weaving up the impressive buttress. 1) 4a, 14m. Climb Hollybush Gully and move out left to climb a groove to its top, step left across the side-wall then mantelshelf onto a small stance. 2) 4a, 16m. Continue up the groove then step left and tackle the bulges by a trio of awkward, and poorly-protected semi-mantelshelves, mild but bold. It is also possible to start up Jeffcoat's Chimney then follow ledges rightwards via a long traverse to the base of the groove, at the same grade. © ROCKFAX

Zane lead the first pitch abd me the 2nd. The protection was poor on the 2nd pitch but managed it all the same. Lovely climb and some great moves on the first pitch!have a look at the really old cam in the 2nd crack! (Slowly rusting to nothing)

Climbed most of the second pitch without a functioning left leg after belting my knee on a rock. Felt more like 5a with the use of only 3 limbs combined with the damp and slimey conditions. Leader ran the two pitches into one with only a single. Didn't go well.

An interesting and varied route. Got me thinking about movement. Ran it together as one pitch. Found the 1st semi-mantleshelf hardish but ok due to bomber cam placement, second bold but ok, and third a real headgame and balancing act (need better technique clearly).

This climb has at least 3 different starts! I started up what looked like the best (4b direct); was warned off it by someone who thought I'd strayed on to Ruby Tuesday, (why DO I still listen to strangers?!) then took the long way round (the original start) from way out left, which is a bit of an unnecassery diversion really. Still, a great route.

Excellent climb, challenging at many points but never too hard technically! Found the step left under the roof to be a bit mentally challenging but it was actually rather easy once I went for it! Went left to get a last bit of gear in before the mantelshelves but had run out of extenders so ended up avoiding it on the left. Stepped back right and finished over remaining shelves with some drag. Enjoyable!

Move to the first ledge is polished, so if you put a runner for it make sure its a long one, due to rope drag. If you do the route in one go the same advice follows throughout, as the top pitch with rope drag is "interesting".

I led first pitch, al led second. pigeon abbatoir just above the first belay due to recent peregrine falcon activity, however there were no nestlings there. We would not have climbed the route in the first place if the notices advising that the birds might still be around had actually specified which routes or buttresses to avoid! Advising climbers to be careful without being more specific is not really very helpful, no matter how good your intentions...

Got caught in serious wind at the unprotected top after heavy rain. Pulled on a rope dropped by another climber to gain the top out. The rest was all my own work. Harder than Severe in those conditions.
