Why do you have hand coils here? I'm just wondering, trying to learn the ropework.
Red Rover - 21/Dec/13
Incase you need to drop the hand coils and run a short pitch.

OK. But what if the second falls while youre holding the coils? Won't they just provide slack for the falling climber to accelerate so theyre harder to stop?

You twist a loop round the back of your hand (locking off the hand coils) and the live rope comes out between your two middle fingers. It's very quick to do, release and is very secure - as in there won't be any slack pulled through the hand coils. Hope that explains it! Henry

Yes that makes sense, thanks.
