Overview

Reopened after extensive refurbishment, The Roaches Bunkhouse provides cosy, comfortable group accommodation at the foot of The Roaches, a famous gritstone escarpment along the southwest edge of the Peak District. Worn into fantastic shapes by the elements, the rocks stretch for 3 miles with magnificent views over Tittesworth reservoir. The edge provides some of the best gritstone climbing in the country, with famous routes such as Valkyrie and The Swan.

You have a choice of two separate self contained lodges, one sleeping 9 in 2 bedrooms and the other sleeping 25 in 5 bedrooms. For larger groups, the two lodges can be interconnected for exclusive use bookings of up to 35 guests. Both lodges have well equipped kitchens, dining tables large enough for all guests, comfortable lounge areas, TVs, underfloor heating and WiFi. Outside there are patio areas with picnic tables and private parking. Bed linen is included. BYO towels.

Roaches Bunkhouse is an ideal base for groups of climbers, walkers and cyclists as well as for friends & family get-togethers, retreats and celebrations. There are glorious walks, world class climbing, and fantastic cycling from the doorstep in all directions. Plus, with local pubs and amenities just a stone's throw away, you’ll find everything you need for a memorable stay.

Roaches Bunkhouse is in the village of Upper Hulme in the Peak District National Park, 150 meters from Ye Old Rock Inn pub, which provides excellent food and draught ales. The Roaches Tea Room is 1/2 a mile away and The Three Horse Shoes, The Lazy Trout and The Winking Man are all within 2 miles. Leek, 3 miles away, a bustling market town, is the closest place for shopping.

The description is perhaps overselling this one a bit. We stayed there last November and the accommodation does come with a few drawbacks. Most rooms do not have windows or direct ventilation, they do have fungus on the walls. A rooms sleeps 4 people but this leaves no space for any bags or for 2 persons to pass each other. The doors don´t lock and don´t reach the floor nor the ceiling. Common area and kitchen are nice though and the location is too.
