Francis Hardy 20 Jan, 2018 Solo Fantastic - second time doing Crib Goch in winter but far more serious this time with quite heavy snowfall throughout the route and very low temps - a great intro to winter ridges for Alex. Emily and Alex went straight down from the summit where we met up with Lee and Laura. Lee and I then went on over LLiwedd where blind conditions left us stumbling around for quite some time before we found the path.

The Introverted Moth 30 Jan, 2017 Sent dnf Intention was to continue the Horseshoe from beginning to end at the highest possible position throughout all the ridges. Managed this through Crib to the summit, then continued on the southern ridges until my girlfriend fatigued. We dropped down and circumnavigated the southern ridges then attempted to climb over and make our way back to the 'Y' Car Park. As we reached the top, the weather changed and darkness fell fast, continued for an hour in torchlight, then I called a stop to the movement on safety grounds. Found and shelterd area, built it up with further rocks and 'got through' the night. Descended at first light. All in all still a fantastic trip and my girlfriend learnt thae importance of alternate route planning and 'always' assume the worst when packing and can now shelter herself appropriately if required.

Roger Burrows 16 Jan, 2016 AltLd O/S Great day out. Weather was threatening throughout the morning and, by the time we were on the decent heavy snow was starting. Original plan was to do Great Gully, but snow conditions made us change plan. Really soft, and was waist deep in places. There was a thin layer of frozen stuff on the surface but it was like treading on brittle cardboard. The higher we were the more solid, but nothing to write home about. First time putting crampons on in nearly a year, and felt great to get onto Crib Goch. start @ 08:30 finish @ 15:00

atom 31 Jan, 2015 - Camped at Snowdonia Park Campsite in Waunfawr on friday night, had a lovely pint of Theodore Stout produced at the brewpub on site. Both slept in our new solo tents. Left before sunrise and parked at Pen-y-pass car park for £10 all day. Was very windy and cold. Left the car at 7:45am and took the Pyg Track. Wardens notice said 70mph winds and 45cm snow for the day before, recommended crampons and ice axe which were packed thankfully. Temperature said -5 and feels like -15 which I'd say was pretty accurate on the ridge itself. Caught the sunrise colours hitting Glyder Fach shortly after setting off. Great views down the Llanberis Pass, first views of the horseshoe and Snowdon summit which stayed in clag most of the day. We broke off from the Pyg and proceeded up the Crib Goch Path, Crampons and micro spikes fitted we followed a fairly intermittent path up until we lost it in the snow drifts. Decided to head round to the right and traverse diagonally up to the summit. Met a couple of lads who where a little unprepared and asked if they could follow us like we knew where the path was haha. Jethro took us up a short gully with his ice axe which was quite demanding and very exciting all the same, very glad I had crampons on for that. Our first experience of winter mountaineering and ice climbing went well. Got up to the summit cairn of Crib Goch 923m, as did the two chaps with no spikes or axes, they had to dig out holds for hands and feet. Got to hand it to them, they had some balls, good effort. Met another guy on his own who came up from the side further along and followed us for a while. Not sure if it was hail or snow balls blown off the ridge into our faces but it stung. The ridge was spectacular with views all round and very narrow, could walk along it for a while and then was forced by the wind to traverse while holding the top with my hands. Went left round the first of the pinnacles then left again and then to the right of the third and final one. The path eased off a little on the other side and could see a couple of guys starting a mixed climb of ice and trad up the north face of Crib Goch. Hiked along the Crib y Ddysgl and up the Garnedd Ugain via a strenuous scramble over large rocks to its summit trig point at 1065m. from here it was steady hiking to the top of Snowdon along the Llanberis Path and the Mountain Railway. Came past the junction of The Pyg Track and met a load of people. Arrived on the top of Snowdon for about midday. Station and visitors centre cafe were closed for the winter unfortunately but adequate shelter was found round the side of the building to drink coffee, eat chocolate hobnobs and celebrate with a wee couple snifters of Monkey Shoulder and Jura Whiskeys. Quick photo at the summit trig point as it was horrendous on the top. Headed directly down along the start of the Watkin Path to the South west Ridge and Bwlchysaethau snow banks were great fun power sliding in then along the climb of Y Lliwedd, fairly well signposted path with cairns zig zagging up to the summit at 898m. Was blessed with some stunning scenery and lovely crepuscular rays over in the south. Ate some rather frozen Jelly beans courtesy of Jethro. A short down and back up to the double top of Y Lliwedd and then followed the ridge down. Witnessed some really cool snow devils or vortexes whipping up the snow along the edge. From here the wind started to pick back up again and took me off my feet. Had to literally crawl on hands and feet and all while being hammered by ice. Finally made it to the Miners Track and the water of Llyn Llydaw. Took crampons off and hiked back along a good well maintained path past disused mining huts and works. Arrived back at the carpark for about 3pm. Cooked with Jetboils in the car haha. Jethro had tracked the route on his watch and it came in at 8.87 miles in 6 hours 48mins. One of the most incredible experiences I've ever had, cant wait to get out again for more winter scrambling. Very impressed with my crampons and with Jethro's ice axe skills along the way :) Wow! what a day Sorry for the massive write up :/ got carried away but I hope you enjoy

wjcdean 22 Feb, 2014 AltLd O/S moved together with Adam, alternating leads. Snow improved with ascent. Only patches on Lliwedd. High winds made it interesting on those flat sections where the knife-edge disappears. You may call it 'crawling', I call it 'freestyle'. Claimed as onsight because it's my first time in winter
