Please refrain from climbing outside

Due to the ongoing spread of Covid-19, please abstain from climbing outside.

At UKC we are all climbers and we understand the strong urge to be outdoors as the weather is finally improving, but we feel this is no longer socially acceptable. You can read our statement here.

We have suspended the UKC Logbooks Top Ascents and Conditions pages and we will no longer accept ascents dated from 23rd March onwards. You can still upload your historic ascents.

200m. The cavernous and atmospheric gully separating Carn Etchachan and Shelterstone. The topout may include a fun short section of ice. Enjoy!

βeta: Quality gully. Short ice pitch at the end made for an exciting finish. Tougher than expected. Was feeling quite knackered after climbing Aladdins Coulior and downclimbing Diagonal Gully. Amazing day!

Francis Hardy 2 Jan, 2019 Solo Climbed on a perfect cold sunny day after walking over from the Couloir on Lochan. The gully was pretty thin, though what snow was there was very crisp. The snow runs out about three quarters up and the top featured a loose scramble and then a few meters of hard water ice which was great fun.

Jamie Johnston 23 May, 2012 Solo Ski descent after a 3am start from Inverness as Pete had an afternoon business meeting. Arriving at spot height 1141 and then crossing the plateau and traversing round to Castlegates as the sun rose was magical. Good snow in the gully, and needless to say we didn't see anybody else.

Jamie Johnston 19 Apr, 2009 Solo Skied after working nightshift and driving up from Edinburgh without any sleep - ascended up the Northern Corries path and out to Macdui, before descending Garbh Uisge Mor and into Castlegates Gully. 3 - 5 m broken section at the top which I scrambled down. Beautiful day to be out, but sitting having lunch at Loch Avon was when the tiredness kicked in - the climb back out again fairly wiped me out!
