Mountain Spirit ??, 2011 - I did a route on this crag but it was round the back and me and two Plas Y Brenin instructors did it in modern Super Alpine Style - ie No Fixed Line or LPP. I am not sure if it was this route or another one. FIRST ASCENT OF THE COOL-IOANNOU RIDGE IN THE LLANBERIS PASS, LLANBERIS, SNOWDONIA, NORTH WALES Alpine Grade: F+/D+? By Savvas ‘Manaslu’ Ioannou Last may two Plas Y Brenin staff - Rory and Jo – and myself as part of my Rock Climbing 1:1 training went to a remote part of the Llanberis Pass to climb together. Wednesaday morning we warmed up on the boulders near Dinas Chromleich in The Llanberis Pass and some technique development. Rory then drove us to the access point of our crag – which he said it was called Lion Crag. We hillwalked as much as possible and then scrambled up the rest of the hill that lead us to the crag. Rory roped us up together in an alpine style fashion and then began to climb and place the sling at the top of the first pitch of the 3 pitch route. He then tugged the rope to signal me and Jo to climb – I was seconder and Jo was third person in the team. Pitch 1: Mod/Diff: The first pitch was very easy climbing and had many big holds but involved a tricky move. Pitch 2: Diff/V.Diff: The second pitch was a little harder and involved more daring moves and trickier holds including a sloper and a slightly dodge foothold. Pitch 3: Mod/Diff/V.Diff: The last but not least pitch was of similar quality to the second pitch and involved similar moves and holds. Top-Out: After we finished the third we decided to top out instead of down climbing. Ridge Scramble: This to me was the hardest part of the route – due to balance and coordination problem. Descent: We descended down a tricky footpath. As it was a first ascent the grades of each pitch are a guess and an estimate – no means certain. All pitches were done in Alpine style without using LPP – leader placed protection – and no fixed line. Me and our team leader and guide Rory at the top of the route.
