20m. ‘The line’ on Bryher. Unfortunately the climbing is not as good quality as it looks. The aspect of the crag is the wrong side of the island for weathering and sun, so it’s very gritty and dries incredibly slowly, if at all. The line has seepage and is one of those rotten granite erosion lines. If the line is brushed on abseil and left for a couple of days in dry windy conditions the grade might be lower.
Having said all that the line is so compelling and still worthwhile.
A strenuous start leads up to a loose flake that wobbles at the bottom of the crack. Use this and the next to get up and established in the crack line. Poor left foot holds make progress hard and laybacking is almost impossible. Large cams protect. Carry on all the way to the top of the bouldery summit.
