Please refrain from climbing outside

Due to the ongoing spread of Covid-19, please abstain from climbing outside.

At UKC we are all climbers and we understand the strong urge to be outdoors as the weather is finally improving, but we feel this is no longer socially acceptable. You can read our statement here.

We have suspended the UKC Logbooks Top Ascents and Conditions pages and we will no longer accept ascents dated from 23rd March onwards. You can still upload your historic ascents.

Rockfax Description
Remarkably sustained climbing in evermore exposed situations on the very prow of the buttress make for a memorable experience. Start at a small gravel ledge reached via a long rising traverse across scree and small grassy ledges, beginning 70m up the path from the Woolworth Boulder.
1) 10m. Follow a narrow rib of clean rock and then grass ledges to a belay in the base of a V-shaped bay.
2) 12m. Take the left-hand crack until a thin horizontal crack on the left wall at 7m can be used to gain the arete. Take the face just left of the arete to a good ledge and block belay.
3) 22m. Climb the chimney/crack above past a steepening, from where easier climbing rightwards gains a stance in a corner.
4) 20m. Difficult hand jamming up the corner-crack leads to easier blocky ground. Move up and right to a small pinnacle and belay on the edge of the buttress.
5) 12m. Head up leftwards and then back right to a good ledge and belay below a short corner.
6) 10m. Move up the short corner to a ledge and then up the chockstone filled chimney until a move left gains a ledge and awkward belay.
7) 12m. Head left along the narrow ledge and move around the arete onto the exposed face. Climb the face to the top. © Rockfax

Paul Sagar 28 May, 2019 Solo O/S Swung by the Lakes after dropping Guy at Inverness airport and before heading to see parents. Great route, though I took the first pitch direct on the arête as the corner was wet (probably a higher tech grade, but easier in terms of not needing such traditional tactics!). Found the second crack section pretty demanding for VDiff - two hand jams and trusting smears for the feet seems a little much for the grade, and I’m glad I’d learned how to jam before trying this, as sans-rope I had to really believe in what I was doing. Committed to the moves, and then romped home to glory. Beautiful conditions on a perfect late spring evening when I had the crag to myself. A few other people at Scafell summit, with whom I had a friendly chat, before proceeding to do my usual party trick and fuck up the walk off. Yes, people, I MESSED UP THE WALK OFF FROM SCAFELL. Trying to follow the circuit described in the Goodwin guide I somehow managed to descend into the wrong bloody valley. Ended up doing a big loop and re-summitting Scafell. Saw a great sunset, though; suppose that compensated for doing a 22km round trip when it was supposed to be 9...Note to self: Read descent notes properly and take a real bloody map, and a compass. Or just don’t be a muppet.

HardknottDave 21 Apr, 2018 Lead rpt Lovely day. Pitch 2 caused some initial trouble, but decided I'd gone too high before trying to traverse. Pitch 4 says the crack is difficult to start, but we found it was also difficult to continue. Final pitch we doubted we should progress to the end of the ledge, but still wonder if the short-cut we took up the wall was in fact harder. It is probably 15 years since I climbed this route so memory didn't help much. Memory also failed to remind just how hard the decent gully is. All-in-all a brilliant day out.

Rog Wilko 30 Jun, 2009 - After eyeing up the line from Scafell crag recently we felt we had to do this route. It is a delightful route, probably worth ***. It is consistent in grade with good gear (a simple rack without cams should be fine) and excellent rock. There are no route finding problems and unlike some long Lakes VDiffs (eg Bowfell Buttress) there are no real out of the grade difficulties. All in all a great route for those lacking experience to gain some on a long mountain route. PS Debbie finally got her head on to lead the last two pitches after a desultory start.

Tony Buckley ?Jan, 1989 AltLd Done on a cold clear day. At the start the rock was greasy, and as we progressed it became icy too, which was fun in rock boots. At the top we unroped...then put the harnesses back on and rigged an abseil once we'd seen the verglas on the descent. And then we walked down to Borrowdale in the sunset and dark. Great day!
