Excellent long scramble up multiple slabs, towers, and gendarmes, with generally solid rock on the ridge, but some areas of poorer quality higher up.
Three starts available:
- Directly up the base of the buttress, which is steep and scrubby, with some loose rock
- Head further right on vegetation and follow up a stream that gains the crest of the buttress at about 1250m (easiest)
- grade 18/19 start from higher up the scree
Joins upper basin of Mt Wakefield just under the radio towers at 2000m. 1km to Wakefield summit from topout. Descent down scree fan visible from the Unwin Hut, or continue along ridge (much longer.
