Wonderful french mountain limestone. Mainly slabby, the rock has great friction and is plastered with deep gouttes.
Its a hell of a hike from Abondance so you can drive up an unpaved road to a parking spot at the lowest point of the cliffs, 'Petit Raille'.

The details on this crag/area are quite light. On the S. side of the Mont Chauffe there is a line of excellent quality limestone cliffs and slabs extending for over 1km. The petit Raille is just one of five principal sectors/crags. There are many many climbs - mostly fully bolted - available and there are about 70 for the Petit Raille alone. The climbing on the S. side of the Mont Chauff would keep most entertained for weeks. Check out the Rgion Chauff section of the Chablais Grimpe website for very detailed route descriptions and photos. http://www.chablais-grimpe.com/chauffe/chauffe_voiespetiteraille.php?f=0
Access. You can drive up to parking at Le Sauvage - above Abondance and through Le Mont - Take the rough track to the first wide parking area - you won't need a 4x4 unless there's snow on the ground. All secteurs are accessible from here by differing lengths of walking.
The climbing by the way is excellent! climbojimbo - 04/Sep/12 |
