Chrinoid Smile, Halldale Quarry © Chris Craggs

Crag features

Halldale Quarry is a huge open hole in the ground which was developed in 2001. There were a number of good walls including the Spectre Wall which gave some excellent sport routes. Most other sections were developed but they are not in the same class as the Spectre Wall. In 2018 planning permission was granted to build a housing estate in the quarry. The planning permission refers to 'Cawdor Quarry' although it appears that the development is almost exclusively taking place in Halldale. The climbs described here are the best of the set and they are recorded for historical reasons. At the time of writing, they do still exist and the development is only progressing slowly.

Restricted Access

Tarmac (the landowner) does not permit climbing on this site. If you choose to climb here and your presence is challenged, remain polite and respectful and if asked to leave do so as quickly as is safely possible.

Currently or imminently under development for housing.

Planning accepted for 200 odd houses and restaurants and shops. Get in the now and get these classics before they are no more!

Definitely some work going on in here. For the record I walked through here in 1996 and noted the Spectre wall and let Gary know about it a few years later.

I would just like to say that in 2006 Tarmac stated no climbing, however really want to know if this is still the case (routes were re-bolted on the left hand side last year)

Hi, I went climbing here 7th April 2013, miserable place, very quiet and din't trust some of the rusted bolts, good climbing though, tough and good fun, loose rock so will be heading back to the trad climbs around this area.

Is this still the case? Went down today for a walk around and saw two parties of climbers. There are no signs around indicating climbing isn't (or is) allowed.

The owners of the quarry - Tarmac - have asked us to state that no climbing is allowed here. Please don't leave any further comments on this crag.
