Two quarried walls overlooking Llandudno. The Upper Empire is the large and impressive-looking floodlit crag which appears in many a Llandudno town publicity brochure. Rock quality is just about 'good enough' on the left-hand routes and the lines are exciting, worthwhile and unlikely (and the floodlit night climbing is atmospheric!). If you start drawing "X's" on loose flakes and blocks you might quickly run out of chalk! The wall gets sun from mid-morning until about 5pm.
The Lower Empire is a short, very steep, well-sheltered sun-trap, providing year-round entertainment for jug thugs.
Take the narrow Ty-Gwyn Road (to the Orme summit) behind the Empire Hotel. Follow Ty-Gwyn Road uphill around a left-hand hairpin; after a further 200m limited roadside parking is reached on the left side (driving up hill) l, opposite a small fenced-off area through the trees (this is the lower tier), upper tier is behind.
Please avoid climbing on routes: Empire of the Sun and newly developed routes to the left. The countryside park has made the BMC aware of some vegetation clearance issues, which need to be resolved. During this period please avoid any new developments of the crag.
