Crag features

Elephant's Cave, sitting below the hill of Pen y Dinas with its Iron Age fort, consists of a series of quarried walls and caves, held up by three large rock pillars: the Elephant's Legs. The sheltered location means some of the steep routes stay almost rain-free but, although there's not much seepage, the quarried rock tends to be quite slick and the north face is rather slow drying.

Whilst not being of the same rock quality as the majority of the Orme, the routes deserve attention and would benefit from traffic. The crag has had a fairly thorough clean-up but care is still required.

There is still some re-equipping and active projects to be completed - please respect these.

Approach notes

It is possible to approach from beneath Lower Empire crag by following the path past the end of the crag, into the trees and through a gate in the iron-railings fence. An alternative approach is to park in a small lay-by about 200m up the hill from Parisella's Cafe in the Happy Valley Gardens, accessed by turning left directly opposite the Grand Hotel (signposted to the Ski Slope). The crag is visible amongst the trees up on the left.
