Crag features

Single pitch. Balme Etrange offers wonderful climbing up walls, tufas and some overhangs up to 35m. Sector Boum is similar. However Balme Rousse and Le Dégueuloir offer mostly very steep, athletic climbing with tufas between 15 and 25 metres (attention Bouée de Covid is 40 metres).

Approach notes

Park at the entrance to the car park for "Grottes de Choranche".

For Balme Etrange and Pierrot Beach: follow the path up towards the obvious cliffs, from opposite an antenae, continuing direct for Pierrot Beach (10 to 15 mins). For Balme Etrange: from the 4th bend on the path to Pierrot Beach traverse past a spring to gain a gully/slope leading to the crag after 15 mins.

For the other sectors, go through the entrance for the show cave visitor centre and follow the path past the show cave and toilets. From the viewpoint take the higher path on the right for Resseau de Gournier. Continue over a wooden bridge and go left to arrive at a wooden platform, follow a narrow path up left and then across the hillside. Go right up a gully/slope (lots of handlines) to reach Le Dégueuloir (30 mins). Ignore this and stay on the path to arrive at Balme Rousse (30 mins) and Boum (35 mins).

No Access Issues

Parking for climbers is tolerated as long as you park at the entrance and not close to the visitor centre.

Obviously best behaviour when going through the visitor centre entrance.
