Possibly the most beautiful mountain in the world.
Legend has it that the two peaks that make up 'Els Encantats' were two hunters who were turned to stone by lightning after skiving off mass to go hunting deer on the mountain.
The 'voie normale' takes a central 'Monastero Gully' (PD, ~700m) that ends in a saddle, the Enfordadura Gap, between the two peaks. From there the steeper Petit Encantat can be climbed in two pitches at about VS, or a moderately difficult but exposed scramble to the Grand Encantat (alt. 2747m).
In winter there are a number of excellent excursions on the north and northwest faces of the mountain, all of truly alpine proportions. The Ernest Mallafre refuge keeps a collection of lamenate route descriptions.
The rock type is mixed.
The base of the mountain is approx 2 hours from Espot and perhaps 30 minutes from the Ernest Malafre hut next to the Sant Maurici lake.
From the summit of Grand Encantat, there is a steep path leading off the back of the mountain.
