Crag features

The climbs are all still there in various conditions, its quite overgrown now, some dead trees at the top, some good tree's for anchors and some trees probably right where you want to climb, but your still able to climb. Lots of nettles and brambles and the bottom of the climbs but if you fancied a mission. There is a bit of path that leads up to the quarry.

The guide its in is North of England Rock climbs by Stewart Wilson (1991) and is under Markse Quarry.

Much overlooked and often driven by, this is a neglected quarry three times the height of the popular and nearby Downholme Quarry. It has good 'faux' multi-pitch stance and easy descents. It lacks any in situ anchors (trees etc.) so gear is often required. There is the possibility of installing some stakes, and indeed, there are two in place.

The crag is very young at this point and will require some extensive clearing of rockfall before it is safe but it has the possibility of being a highly versatile and interesting crag.

(I believe this is Marske Quarry developed in 1970s by Paul Ingham et al however it subsequently fell out the guides due to the unstable nature of the quarry, especially the upper part. I've been and agree there is scope to 're-open' or discover the routes on the lower tier). There is a guidebook for it somewhere, i can't remember which...

Approach notes

Carpark will gravel 100m past the bridge across the Swale River on the road to Richmond. From here, walk into the bushes and up a steep bank to crest out into the quarry.

The area around is in need of a little TLC ie loads of thorns etc long trousers are recommended I'll go up with some trimmers soon haha
