Crag features

Two contrasting cliffs, both in superb settings. Altea Col is steep and imposing, with some majestic long routes. The location high above Mascarat offers fine views to towards Calp and the Peñón, and dramatic isolation in sharp contrast to the development passed on the approach drive.

The clean slab of Dalle d'Olla was one of the first crags to be developed here and became infamous amongst Costa Blanca devotees from the 1980s. Whilst it is a bit old wave, the slab consists of smooth grey rock and the main routes give excellent climbing with surprisingly little polish, as well as offering great views of all the luxury villas far below.

Approach notes

The crags are situated at the top of the extensive and impressive Altea Hills development. Turn off the N332 at the grand Altea Hills entrance and follow the road uphill, over the motorway, to the entance complex on the right. Pass the security barrier (say you are going to Ave Gran Bretangne to go climbing “Escalade” and they will let you through, otherwise they may try registering and phoning through to the resident) then turn right and drive up Avenue de Europa. Follow this road as far as 'Ave. Gran Bretange' on the right.

Dalle d'Olla - Take the left-hand branch and continue for about 200m until the crag appears on the right, park on the roadside.

Altea Col - Turn right up 'Ave. Gran Bretange' then take the next left 'Ave. Gales'. Drive up here to a sharp bend by a concrete pumping station where a dirt track leads off left. The gate is sometimes locked, park considerately here (room for 2 or 3 cars) or park on the roadside avoiding the yellow kerbed areas. Then pick up a track off to the right going down hill for about 50m then take well-cairned path, slight left, passing a tree with a green cross which leads to the crag which can be clearly seen.

Access Advice

Parking is becoming increasingly difficult as development increases (2018), please park considerably and avoid disturbing residents.

Security happy to let us pass. Main 'colours' wall recently rebolted. Grades on the stiff side.

Guard just let us through, no questions but I didn't think much of the routes or the rusted bolts higher up on the cliff. Only did one route then left, won't come back. I get the feeling climbing isn't allowed as on our way down (walked out but got a lift in) a security guy stopped us to ask if we were climbing, he didn't seem to pleased about it but we for him we were on our way out and was happy enough then.

We asked the security guard if we were ok climb here and he happily raised the barrier and let us through. Path to the Dalle D'ola area was short and well trodden. Areas of the Altea col took a little more bashing
